Translation

Finished in 1439 after centuries of construction, Strasbourg’s Notre Dame Cathedral is asymetrical and extraordinary. The tallest Christian building for more than 400 years, the cathedral still towers over the city today. Given its height and the fact that it’s surrounded by houses, it’s difficult to take pictures of the entire building.*

The interior of the cathedral is as imposing as the exterior. The nave is fairly narrow, with an extremely high vaulted ceiling (32 meters, about 105 feet). The exceptional stained glass windows are from the 13th and 14th centuries. But it’s the rose window, aka the Big Rose, with a diameter of 15 meters (49 feet), that is truly spectacular. Rose windows usually feature saints, but this one breaks with tradition, as it’s composed of ears of wheat which represent Strasbourg’s economic power.

The cathedral is famous for its astronomical clock (which is difficult to take a good picture of). Built in 1547 and restored in 1840, every year the clock automatically shows the dates of moveable feasts on a perpetual calendar, thanks to its one-of-a-kind calculator. The clock also has automatons: when it rings every day at 12:30pm, the twelve apostles pass before Christ and he blesses them.

Translation

Before leaving the cathedral, you absolutely have to go up to the platform. The climb isn’t easy, but the view over the city of Strasbourg is magnificent.
