A number of French verbs require the preposition sur in front of a noun or stressed pronoun.

acheter (quelque chose) sur le marchĂ©   to buy (something) at the market
appuyer sur (le bouton)   to press (the button)
appuyer sur (le mur)   to lean on (the wall)
arriver sur (les 5h00, minuit)   to arrive at around (5am, midnight)
avoir de l’effet sur   to have an effect on
avoir de l’influence sur   to have influence over
boire (quelque chose) sur (quelque chose)   to drink (something) on top of (something else)
chanter sur l’air de (quelque chanson)   to sing to the tune of (some song)
choisir sur catalogue   to choose from a catalogue
compter sur   to count on
se concentrer sur   to concentrate on
copier sur (quelqu’un)   to copy from (someone)
croire quelqu’un sur parole   to take someone’s word, to take someone at his word

diriger son attention sur   to direction one’s attention to

influer sur une dĂ©cision   to influence / have an influence on a decision
interroger quelqu’un sur quelque chose   to question someone about something
se jeter sur quelqu’un   to throw oneself upon someone
se lamenter sur ses malheurs   to lament one’s misfortunes
loucher sur   to ogle
prendre exemple/modĂšle sur quelqu’un   to model oneself on someone
questionner quelqu’un sur quelque chose   to question someone about something

rĂ©gner sur   to reign over
rejeter une faute sur quelqu’un   to place the blame on someone
rester sur la dĂ©fensive   to stay on the defensive

retenir (une charge/une cotisation) sur le salaire   to deduct (an expense/contribution) from salaries
revenir sur (un sujet, une question)   to go back over (a topic, an issue)

toucher une commission sur les ventes   to earn a commission on sales
