The Subjunctivisor!
Does imaginer require the subjunctive?
The subjunctive after imaginer is optional: it depends on how you use the verb.
Generally speaking, you need the indicative after imaginer:
Par exemple…
J’imagine qu’elle va avec vous.
I imagine that she is going with you.
But when you are hypothesizing, using the imperative, or negating imaginer, the subjunctive tends to be used:
Par exemple…
J’imagine qu’ils aient une grande maison avec une palissade blanche.
I imagine that they have a big house with a white picket fence.Imaginez que vous ayez trois désirs.
Imagine that you have three wishes.Nous n’imaginons pas qu’il puisse être le coupable.
We don’t imagine / think that he could be the guilty one.
