The Subjunctivisor!
Does de manière que require the subjunctive?
De manière que may require the subjunctive, depending on whether the outcome that follows has been achieved.
1) When de manière que indicates that something has occurred, it’s followed by the indicative.
Par exemple…
J’ai rempli le réservoir d’essence de manière que tu peux partir immédiatement.
I filled the gas tank so that you can leave immediately. (you’re ready to go)
2) When de manière que introduces a goal or possibility, it needs the subjunctive.
Par exemple…
Je remplis le réservoir d’essence de manière que tu puisses partir immédiatement.
I’m filling the gas tank so that you can leave immediately. (at least in theory)
De manière que is a conjunctive phrase.
