De façon que

The Subjunctivisor!

Does de façon que require the subjunctive?

De façon que may require the subjunctive, depending on whether the outcome that follows has been achieved.

1) When de façon que indicates that something has occurred, it’s followed by the indicative.

Par exemple…

J’ai parlé fort de façon que tout le monde peut entendre.
I spoke loudly so that everyone could hear. (and they did)

2) When de façon que introduces a goal or possibility, it needs the subjunctive.

Par exemple…

Je parle fort de façon que tout le monde puisse entendre.
I’m speaking loudly so that everyone can hear. (at least, I hope they can)

De façon que
is a conjunctive phrase.
