He, her, him

The French word lui functions as two different types of pronouns.

Indirect object pronoun

Lui is the third person singular masculine and feminine indirect object pronoun.

Par exemple…

Michel lui a donné une barrette.   Michel gave her a barrette.
Anny lui donne un bisou.   Anny is giving him a kiss.

Stressed pronoun

Lui is also the third person singular masculine stressed pronoun. (The feminine is elle.)

Par exemple…

Anny parle souvent de lui.   Anny often talks about him.
C'est lui qui a acheté la barrette.   He's the one who bought the barrette.
