He, her, him
The French word lui functions as two different types of pronouns.
Indirect object pronoun
Lui is the third person singular masculine and feminine indirect object pronoun.
Par exemple…
| Michel lui a donné une barrette. | Michel gave her a barrette. | |
| Anny lui donne un bisou. | Anny is giving him a kiss. |
Stressed pronoun
Lui is also the third person singular masculine stressed pronoun. (The feminine is elle.)
Par exemple…
| Anny parle souvent de lui. | Anny often talks about him. | |
| C'est lui qui a acheté la barrette. | He's the one who bought the barrette. |
