Literally good quality-price ratio
Register normal
Pronunciation [bo(n) rah puhr kah lee tay pree]
IPA   [bɔ̃ ʀa pɔʀ ka li te pʀi]

Usage notes: Talk is cheap, but the French expression un bon rapport qualité-prix or un bon rapport qualité / prix indicates a good value for your money. It’s often found in product descriptions and reviews.

Par exemple…

Hôtel deux étoiles avec bon rapport qualité-prix   Good value two-star hotel

Since bon is an adjective, you can make it comparative or superlative:

un meilleur rapport qualité-prix   better value
le meilleur rapport qualité-prix   best value

Antonymous expressions

To talk about something that is not a good value, you can negate the expression:

Ce n’est pas un bon rapport qualité-prix   It’s not a good value
Ce resto n’a pas un bon rapport qualité-prix   This restaurant does not offer good value

Or use an antonym:

un mauvais rapport qualité-prix   poor value
un pire rapport qualité-prix   worse value
le pire rapport qualité-prix   worst value

It’s also possible, though uncommon, to use a completely different adjective:

un rapport qualité-prix incroyable   amazing value
un rapport qualité-prix intéressant   good value
un faible rapport qualité-prix   poor value

  • une bonne affaire – good deal
  • bon marché – inexpensive, cheap
  • pas cher – inexpensive
  • un prix avantageux – bargain price
