Vérifier

The Subjunctivisor!

Does vérifier require the subjunctive?

No, vérifier does not take the subjunctive.

Par exemple…

Je vérifie que l’addition est correct.
I’m checking that the bill is correct.

OK, here’s one for you–I couldn’t even get an explanation of this one from a very educated native speaker. I should also point out that he heard the sentence, too, and that like the speaker, he felt that it was fine.

Il faut qu’on vérifie que c’est un genre de truc qu’on puisse acheter.

Il faut qu’on vérifie = subjunctive, but since it’s an -er verb the conjugation is the same

que c’est = indicative after vérifier

un genre de truc qu’on puisse acheter = subjunctive because it’s clear that you’re not sure it exists (and thus can be purchased). It’s like saying chercher quelque chose – if you don’t know whether it exists, you need the subjunctive; if you do, you need the indicative.
