Does comprendre require the subjunctive?
Comprendre may require the subjunctive, depending on whether it is used affirmatively, negatively, or interrogatively:
Par exemple…
Je comprends qu’il ment constamment.
I understand that he lies constantly.Je ne comprends pas qu’il mente constamment.
I don’t understand how he can lie constantly. / I can’t conceive of how it’s possible for him to lie constantly.Comprenez-vous qu’il mente constamment ?
Do you understand how he can lie / how it’s possible for him to lie constantly?
