| Meaning | thanks in advance | |
| Register | normal | |
| Pronunciation | [mehr see da va(n)s] | |
| IPA | [mɛʁ si da vãs] | |
Usage notes: To thank someone in advance, you can use the expression merci d’avance. It’s pretty simple – the main thing is to be sure to use the correct preposition:
Par exemple…
| – Je vous enverrai les résultats demain. – Merci d’avance. |
– I’ll send you the results tomorrow. – Thank you (in advance). |
To thank someone ahead of time for something specific, merci d’avance can be followed by pour + noun or de + verb.
| Merci d’avance pour votre assistance. | Thank you in advance for your assistance. | |
| Merci d’avance de préparer le dîner ce soir. | Thank you in advance for making dinner tonight. |
Remember, it’s merci d’avance, not merci en avance or merci à l’avance.
Variations
These are more formal and less common:
- d’avance, merci
- en vous remerciant d’avance
- merci par avance
- par avance, merci
