Usage notes: The French expression du jour au lendemain is figurative. To say that something happened du jour au lendemain means that it happened suddenly, very quickly, and possibly unexpectedly.

She became famous overnight, Suddenly she was famous, She rocketed to fame.
We loved each other, and then suddenly / out of the blue he left me.

The literal translation of "overnight" is pendant la / une nuit and another way to say it is jusqu’au lendemain.

Other overnight expressions:

  • to drive / travel overnight – rouler / voyager de nuit
  • to keep (be good) overnight – se garder jusqu’à demain
  • to stay overnight – passer la / une nuit
