Usage notes: Though it doesn’t—in fact, can’t—include the word même, the French expression à la fois means "at the same time."

You can’t say ~~à la même fois~~, it just doesn’t make sense.

Par exemple…

Je ne peux pas étudier et te parler à la fois.	I can’t study and talk to you at the same time.
Votre livre est fascinant et édifiant à la fois.	Your book is fascinating and inspiring at the same time.
Il serait mieux de dîner tous à la fois.	It would be better to all have dinner at the same time.

Proverbs with à la fois

Nul ne peut servir deux maîtres à la fois.		You can’t serve two masters. ("No one can serve two masters at the same time.")
On ne peut pas être à la fois au four et au moulin.		You can’t be in two places at once. ("You can’t be at the oven and the mill at the same time.")

Unlike the synonyms above, à la fois can also mean "(one) at a time."
