Usage notes: Au premier mai, fleurit le bon muguet is a straightforward French proverb: "May 1st is when lilies of the valley bloom."

Like its less specific spiritual cousin "April showers bring May flowers," Au premier mai, fleurit le bon muguet evokes the arrival of spring. And of course, it goes a step further, reminding us of the tradition of offering muguets for la Fête du Muguet on the 1st of May.

Variations

  • En mai, fleurit le bon muguet
  • Au premier mai, fleurit le joli muguet

May 1st is a jour férié in France because in addition to la Fête du Muguet, it’s also la Fête du Travail. Learn more in this video: Bonne fête du Premier Mai !
