Meaning at most, or even, if needed
Literally at the strictness

IPA   [a la ʁi gœʁ]

Usage notes: The French expression à la rigueur is useful when estimating or when talking about a possibility.

Par exemple…

J’ai bu deux cafés, trois à la rigueur.   I drank two or three coffees at most.
Il nous faut trois semaines, quatre à la rigueur.   We need three weeks, four at most.
C’est un menteur ou, à la rigueur, un escroc.   He’s a liar, or even a con man.
Tu dois ajouter de la sauce soja ou, à la rigueur, du sel.   You need to add soy sauce or, in a pinch, salt.*
