Les homophones : E

Homophones are two or more words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings and possibly different spellings as well.

E | euh | eux | heu | œufs

La cinquième lettre de l’alphabet est « e ».
The fifth letter of the alphabet is “e.”
euh (interjection) – uh, um, er
On va commencer, euh, sur la page 12. – We’re going ton start, um, on page 12.
alternate spelling: heu
eux (stressed pronoun) – them
C’est pour eux. – It’s for them.
œufs – eggs
Je dois acheter des œufs. – I need to buy some eggs.

 Note that the singular œuf is not a homophone because the f is pronounced.

-é | -ée | -er | -ez

past participle ending for -er verbs
mangé, allé, commencé – ate, went, began
-ée – feminine past participle ending for -er verbs
mangée, allée, commencée – ate, went, began
-erinfinitive ending for -er verbs
manger, aller, commencer – to eat, to go, to begin
-ez – ending for second person plural indicative and imperative of most verbs
(vous) mangez, allez, commencez – (you) eat, go, begin

entre(s)

entre – between, among
entre toi et moi – between you and me
entre(s) – singular conjugations of entrer (to enter)
J’entre toujours avant 8h00. – I always enter before 8 am.

es | est | et | hais/hait ai

ès | esse la lettre S

espace | Espace

Il a ajouté une espace sur le dépliant tandis que j’ai trouvé un espace dans l’Espace pour les cartons.
He added a (printing) space to the flyer while I found a space (some room) in the Espace (Renault car) for the boxes.

été | un été

étépast participle of être (to be)
un été – summer
J’ai déjà été à Athènes en été. – I’ve already been to Athens in the summer.

être | hêtre

être – to be
un être – being
un être humain – human being
le hêtre – beech tree / beech wood
