Les homophones : B

Homophones are two or more words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings and often different spellings as well.

B | bée

La deuxième lettre de l’alphabet est « b ».
The second letter of the alphabet is "b."

J’en suis bouche bée !
I’m stunned!

bai | baie

Un cheval bai dans la baie mange une baie.
A bay horse in the bay is eating a berry.

balade | ballade

J’ai fait une balade en écoutant la ballade.
I took a walk while listening to the ballad.

bar | barre

Ce bar, qui a une barre attachée au mur, sert du bar frit.
This bar, which has a bar (rod) attached to the wall, serves fried bass.

basilic | basilique

Il y a du basilic qui pousse dans le jardin de la basilique.
There’s basil growing in the basilica‘s garden.

Beur | beurre

Les enfants nés en France aux parents nord-africains s’appellent familièrement des « Beurs ».
Children born in France to North African parents are informally called "Beurs."

Tu manges trop de beurre.
You eat too much butter.

bois/boit | le bois

Je bois, tu bois, il boit
Present tense of boire (to drink)

Cette table en bois est très jolie.
This wood table is very pretty.

boue | bout

Le bout de ce bâton est couvert de boue.
The tip of this stick is covered in mud.

le boom | le boum | la boum

L’immobilier est en boom.
Real estate is booming.

J’ai entendu un boum.
I heard a boom (explosion).

Cette chanson a fait un boum. (familiar)
That song was a big hit.

Les travaux sont en plein boum. (familiar)
The work is well underway.

On va avoir une boum ce soir. (informal)
We’re going to have a party tonight.

brin | brun*

Il y a un brin d’herbe dans tes cheveux.
There’s a blade of grass in your hair.

Il l’a dit avec un brin de nostalgie.
He said it with a hint of nostalgia.

Mon fils brun pourrait être mannequin.
My dark-haired son could be a model.

 * Brin and brun are homophones for some French speakers, but not others: learn more.

bu | but**

J’ai bu deux litres d’eau dans le but de manger moins.
I drank two liters of water in order to eat less (lit, "in the goal of eating less").

 ** Some people pronounce the final “t,” in which case these are not homophones.
