Pronominal Verbs

French pronominal verbsThe grammatical term "pronominal" means "relating to a pronoun." You know that conjugated verbs (almost) always need a subject pronoun, but pronominal verbs need a reflexive pronoun as well.

   

Regular -er Verbs

Regular -er French verb conjugationsThere are several thousand verbs that end in -er, the largest category of regular French verbs. To conjugate them, remove the infinitive ending and then add the appropriate -er verb ending.

   

Regular -ier Verbs

Spelling Change Verbs -cer -ger

For the most part, these verbs are conjugated just like regular -er verbs, other than a little problem in some conjugations that must be corrected for reasons of pronunciation. It's easy enough to do, once you understand why and how.

   

Stem-Changing Verbs -e_er -é_er -yer

French stem changing verbsStem-changing verbs, also known as "shoe verbs" or "boot verbs," take the same conjugation endings as regular -er verbs, but have two different verb stems depending on the grammatical person the verb is conjugated for.

   

   

Subjunctive: Irregular Conjugations

French subjunctiveThe French subjunctive conjugations for many otherwise irregular verbs are regular, but not all. Stem-changing verbs and what I like to call very irregular verbs have irregular subjunctive conjugations.

   

Tu Imperative

Verb Misconjugation

French verb misconjugationIn verb tables, the subject is conveniently placed right in front of the verb, which makes figuring out the correct conjugation very straightforward. But it doesn't take long to discover that other words sometimes come between them and sometimes lead to misconjugation.
