The Subjunctivisor!

Does s’imaginer require the subjunctive?

The subjunctive after s’imaginer is optional: it depends how you use the verb.

Generally speaking, you need the indicative after s’imaginer:

Par exemple…

Je m’imagine qu’elle connaît le voleur.
I imagine that she knows the thief.

But when you are hypothesizing, using the imperative, or negating s’imaginer, the subjunctive tends to be used:

Par exemple…

Imaginons-nous qu’elle connaisse le voleur.
Let us imagine / suppose that she knows the thief.

Je ne m’imagine pas qu’elle connaisse le voleur.
I don’t imagine / think that she knows the thief.
