Touristy but charming, the square around Strasbourg’s cathedral is a jumble of old houses, restaurants, hotels, and shops. Today a restaurant, the ground floor of Maison Kammerzell was built in 1467. The three upper floors were added more than a century later, and have highly carved half-timbering.

Translation

According to local legend, there is always, in both summer and winter, cool or cold wind blowing around the cathedral. Obviously it casts a monumental shadow as well, so it’s good to wear a sweater when you visit this square in Strasbourg.

The Strasbourg cathedral’s music is as beautiful as its architecture. One Saturday morning, we were lucky enough to hear the bells ring out, a joyful ringing that lasted for 15 minutes. I’d never heard anything like it.

During one visit, we had the chance to attend a concert by the organist Damien Simon, winner of several international competitions. It was more interesting than a typical organ concert because there were video screens showing the musician in front of the instrument. Nevertheless, after half an hour we’d had enough. We decided to sneak out, but discovered that the exit was locked. We wandered around for 15 minutes trying all the doors – and trying not to laugh, especially when a man joined our quest. (In the end, one of the organizers saw us and let us escape.)
