Manger en Alsace Eating in Alsace
Translation

Colmar (in the Haut-Rhin department) was the first town in Alsace that I visited (in 2008), and it’s also where I ate my first Alsatian meal. Restaurant Unterlinden was next to the tourist office and very close to the Unterlinden Museum, across from a lovely, flowery plaza.

Translation

During lunch, we chatted with a very nice couple from Grenoble whose meal astonished us: hefty salads, choucroûte with meat, and dessert.

Alsatian specialties include tarte flambée (flammeküeche in the Alsatian language), which is kind of like white pizza with a very thin crust, and choucroûte garnie (literally "garnished sauerkraut," sürkrüt in Alsatian), which is sauerkraut, several kinds of sausage, and potatoes.

Translation

There’s one more than deserves an explanation: gratin.* At heart just potatoes baked in white sauce, this traditional dish can also include other vegetables and/or meat. It’s very simple but delicious. Enjoy your meal!

Translation

As for wine, all the whites I drank in Alsace were demi-sec and delicious: Gewurztraminer, Reisling, Muscat, Pinot Gris – I liked them all.

*By the way, au gratin doesn’t mean "with cheese" in French – see the word of the day gratin.
