Translation

You see, my dear friend, that I’m keeping my word to you, and that the bonnets and pompoms don’t take all my time; there will always be some for you. Yet I’ve seen more jewels on this single day than in the four years we spent together; and I think the superb Tanville will feel more chagrin at my first visit, when I fully intend to ask for her, than she ever thought she caused us all the times she came to see us in her finery.

Translation

Mama consulted me about everything; she treats me a lot less like a lodger than in the past. I have my own chambermaid; I have a bedroom and closet at my disposition, and I’m writing to you at a very pretty secretary, for which I was given the key, and where I can lock away anything I want to. Mama told me that I’d see her every day when she gets up; that I need to have my hair done only for dinner, because we would always be alone, and so she’d tell me every day what time I should go join her in the afternoon. The rest of the time is mine, and I have my harp, my drawing, and books like at the Convent; apart from the fact that Mother Perpétue isn’t here to scold me, and that it’s no one’s concern but my own if I never do anything: but since I don’t have my Sophie to chat and laugh with, I’d rather keep busy.

Translation

It’s not yet 5 o’clock; I don’t have to go meet Mama until seven: that’s a good amount of time, if I had something to tell you! But no one has talked to me about anything yet; and without the preparations I see being made, and the number of workers who all come for me, I’d think they weren’t trying to get me married, and that it’s more of the maid Joséphine’s drivel. However, Mama often tells me that a Lady has to stay at the convent until she marries, so since she got me out, Joséphine must be right.
