I  Où l’on commence à ne pas comprendre
The Mystery of the Yellow Room, by Gaston Leroux
I  Where we start to not understand

Translation

It’s not without some emotion that I’m starting to recount here the extraordinary adventures of Joseph Rouletabille. Until now, he had always so formally opposed it that I’d ended up despairing of ever being able to publish the most singular police story of the last fifteen years.

Translation

I even imagine that the public would never have found out the whole truth about the incredible affair known as the "Yellow Bedroom," generator of so many mysterious and cruel and sensational dramas, and in which my friend was so intimately entangled, if, regarding the recent nomination of the illustrious Stangerson for the Legion of Honor’s Grand Cross, an evening newspaper, in a sadly ignorant or audaciously treacherous article, hadn’t revived a terrible adventure that Joseph Rouletabille told me he would have liked forgotten forever.

On oublie si vite à Paris.
Translation

The "Yellow Bedroom"! So who was remembering this affair about which so much had been written 15 years ago? They forget so quickly in Paris.

Translation

Haven’t we forgotten even the name of the Nayves trial and the tragic history of the death of little Menaldo? And yet public attention at the time was so concentrated on the debates that a ministerial crisis which exploded then passed completely unnoticed. Now, the "Yellow Bedroom" trial, which preceded the Nayves affair by several years, had even more repercussions. The entire world spent months studying this obscure problem—to my knowledge, the most obscure that had ever been offered to our police’s insight, that had ever been asked of our judges’ conscience. Everyone looked for the solution to this disturbing problem.
