La morte amoureuse, de Théophile Gautier Dead Woman in Love, by Théophile Gautier
Vous me demandez, frère, si j’ai aimé ; oui.
Translation

You ask me, brother, if I have loved: yes. It’s a remarkable and terrible story, and though I’m 66 years old, I hardly dare disturb the ashes of that memory. I don’t want to deny you anything, but I wouldn’t tell such a story to a less hardy soul. These events are so strange that I can’t believe they happened to me. For more than three years, I was the plaything of a remarkable and diabolical illusion. Me, a poor country priest, I dreamed every night (God grant that it be a dream!) that I led a life of the damned, a life of high society and debauchery.

Translation

A single overindulgent glance at a woman nearly cost my soul; but finally, with the help of God and my patron saint, I managed to banish the evil spirit that had taken hold of me. My life was made difficult by a completely different nocturnal life. By day, I was a priest of the Lord, celibate, occupied by prayer and saintly things; by night, as soon as I’d closed my eyes, I became a young lord, a descriminating connoisseur of women, dogs, and horses, playing dice, drinking and blaspheming; and when I woke at dawn, it seemed on the contrary that I was sleeping and dreaming that I was a priest.

Translation

Of this dream life, I retained memories of objects and words against which I cannot defend myself, and, though I never left the confines of my presbytery, one would, upon hearing me, say I am a man who used everything and retreated from the world, who entered religion and who wants to end his overly troubled days at the bosom of God, rather than a lowly seminarian who grew old in an ignored presbytery, in the heart of a forest and with no link to modernity.

[collapse]
Ah ! quelles nuits ! quelles nuits !
Translation

Yes, I have loved like no one in the world has ever loved, a demented and furious love, so violent that I’m amazed it didn’t make my heart explode. Oh, what nights! What nights!
