Only one third is built up, and another third is forest.* The town of Hyères includes 10 "fractions," three of which are islands. 🙁
Translation

The full name of Hyères is Hyères-les-Palmiers (Hyères the palm trees), and in certain pictures you can see why. Unfortunately, a lot of these palm trees are dying of a disease from Argentina, and they’re removing thousands of them. Apparently it’s too expensive to replant them, so "Hyères-Palm-Trees" will soon be "Hyères-Without-Many-Palm-Trees." 🙁

Translation

In fact, the name could have been Hyères-les-Orangers (Hyères the orange trees). At the end of the 18th century, Hyères was a village surrounded by orange tree plantations. The fruit was transported on the backs of mules to the Tour Fondue port. The citrus was shipped to Marseille and then it went up the Rhône to be delivered to French cities and exported to England. So it was the orange trade that put Hyères on the map,** but the current attractions are a bit different.
