Informal Pronunciation

Prononciation familière

As if normal French pronunciation weren’t hard enough, informal French pronunciation introduces a whole new set of issues, with many sounds being dropped or changed. Here are the potential problem areas – click for detailed lessons.

Assimilation

Certain sounds change from unvoiced to voiced.

E instable

When speaking informally, the e instable (aka e muet) tends to be dropped (which often leads to assimilation).

Liaisons

Optional liaisons are not pronounced in informal French.

Negation

The ne part of negative constructions is usually dropped.

Pronouns

The pronouns je and tu elide (contract) a lot more in informal French, and il loses its l or even disappears entirely.
