French pronunciation

The letter combination gn is usually pronounced like the “ni” in “onion.” IPA symbol: [ ɲ ].

  There are several dozen exceptions, mostly English cognates, in which gn is pronounced as two separate consonants: agnostique, cognitif, diagnostique, ignition, etc.
