Histoire et particularités de soldes en France History and characteristics of the sales in France

The history of the sales in France began in Paris in the 19th century. One Simon Mannoury decided to modify the traditional system that governed the sale of manufactured products, which was based on unit demand and supply corresponding to a previously negotiated price.

To achieve his ends, he founded one of the very first Parisian department stores: Le Petit Saint-Thomas. This innovative establishment offered several revolutionary principles to new clients: freedom to enter and browse; shelves presenting a variety of readily visible, fixed-price products; a return and exchange policy for defective products; and abundant advertisements in order to attract new consumers.

Translation

This untried system resulted in a proliferation of available products, but also an increase in unsold items. To counter this unexpected effect, Simon Mannoury organized an uncommon commercial event with the goal of liquidating the surplus by slashing prices as much as possible: that was the birth of the sales.

Translation

In France, the official sales take place twice a year: the summer sales (starting the last Wednesday in June) and the winter sales (starting the second Wednesday in January), in contrast to North America, which has complete freedom in this domain. Each sale now lasts for five weeks rather than six, thus leaving French shopkeepers with a week to organize two periods of week-long, American-style sales.

Translation

You need to know that the French sales follow a progressive model (discounts of 30, 40, 50, 70 percent and more) beginning with the first markdown which usually offers the smallest discount but a wider selection. As the sales continue, the second markdown, third markdown, and final markdown make up the stages corresponding to the price reductions. To be sure of benefitting from the best prices and the best selection, you should evaluate whether what you covet is worth of the risk of waiting when the outcome is very uncertain.
