Translation

Every year around 22 January, when the wine harvests have already been finished for several months, the vines no longer need attention and it’s well and truly winter, wine makers meet to celebrate Saint Vincent, the patron saint of viticulturists. They claim it was in Burgundy that this tradition took root, and that it then spread to the neighboring region of Champagne.

Translation

The choice of Saint Vincent as the patron saint of wine growers remains nebulous. Some say that it’s because the saint’s name begins with the word vin (wine), others declare that he may have been tortured by a grape press wheel, but no one seems certain of the origin of this jolly tradition. The participants are generally part of a brotherhood, each of which has its own customs and way of celebrating. The festival, organized by committees of wine makers in the villages, generally begins with the collecting of bottles from nearby wine makers which will be served during the festivities.

Translation

Then the day of the festival, a procession of costumed wine makers, family, and friends, goes to the home of the one who received "Saint Vincent’s stick" the previous year to then head with him to the church to the sound of fanfare, where a ceremony and blessings of kegs of wine and bread will take place. After the religious service, the committee president will give a speech about the last year’s statement of account, then they’ll head to the festival which consists of numerous convivial activities with wine and wine making tools as the guests of honor.
