Translation

Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day or simply "Saint-Jean" showcases, through fireworks, the themes and symbols of seasonal rites of passage linked to light, all while honoring the historical figure from which it draws it name, and whom the province adopted as its patron saint: Saint John the Baptist.

Translation

In Quebec, this big demonstration of popular jubilation no longer has the same spiritual meaning it used to, when people marched in the streets in a big religious procession, with a curly-haired child or a statue representing the saint, harbinger of Christ’s reign.

Translation

It was nonetheless in order to oppose the unfortunate trend toward paganism that key Québécois figures and bishops, in 1834,  to this celebration dedicated to Saint John the Baptist in a new direction by linking pagan celebrations to the date of 24 June.

Translation

It was also the birth of the Saint John the Baptist Society of Montréal (which still exists today and is in charge of the annual festivities) that led to a great patriotic banquet, which at the time brought together French speakers and English speakers wishing to free themselves of Great Britain’s guardianship.

Translation

Since the start of the Quiet Revolution, during the 60s, the celebration of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day has had a distinctly more political connotation. Indeed, in people’s collective unconscious, this holiday is undeniably moving toward the Québécois people’s claims for independence.
