La Prise de la Bastille The Storming of the Bastille
Translation

Though many people have a basic understanding of the 1789 storming of the Bastille, most of them have been wrongly led to believe that the goal of the operation was to free the prisoners who were incarcerated there.

[collapse]
Translation

In reality, only six prisoners were inside the fortress at the moment French rebels forced their way in. And it was for an entirely different reason that they burst into the royal fortress on 14 July, a day which would become symbolic for the whole of the French people.

The underlying reasons

The storming of the Bastille was in fact motivated by French strikers’ pressing needs for ammunition. During this period of French history, the people and government were in strong disagreement and were incapable of peacefully resolving the conflict that divided them.

[collapse]
Translation

Several agitators had already stolen weapons in order to defend themselves and foment a revolt; however, they were sorely short of ammunition. The idea of assaulting the Bastille was thus a strategic move on the part of the rebellion, since a considerable quantity of ammunition was stocked there. So it was ammunition and not prisoners that they hoped to liberate when they forced the entrance of the fortress on that fateful day.

[collapse]

Translation

The French Revolution is considered by many to have begun after the assault on the Bastille by angry citizens. During this reign of terror, thousands of French citizens were sent to the guillotine and decapitated. It was only when Robepierre (a politician considered an outlaw by his party, since he was helped by the revolt) was himself sent to the guillotine that the excessive use of this sadly deterrent means declined.
