La Prise de la Bastille The Storming of the Bastille
Translation

That’s why the national holiday is celebrated today with great pomp and circumstance in France every summer on 14 July. It’s an important historical date, just like Independence Day is in the US.

Prior political troubles

It was essentially too-high tax rates for the poorest citizens that led the people to rebel. Not only did they have no opportunity to work in order to extricate themselves from poverty, but they couldn’t lead a reasonable life, as money was too rare to pay for lodging and food, and to ensure the support of their families.

Translation

These extreme conditions resulted from an abusive fiscal policy, especially when you consider that it was taxpayers’ money that had financed the construction of the Château of Versailles for the kings of France. The French were burdened by the artistocrats’ ostentatious lifestyle and had become certain that another way of life was possible.

Translation

The American Revolution gave French citizens the idea that they could rebel against their government and create a new type of society. Moreover, the writings of some famous French authors had been read by several erudite citizens, who started noticing the flaws of the French system of the time.

Translation

The major factor that hastened the end of the French Revolution and led to better conditions of life for citizens was Napoléon Bonaparte coming to power in 1799, following a coup d’état. Under his reign, the stability of the country was restored in France and for the people, this was no minor matter given the state in which the nation was found at the moment he ascended the imperial throne. The justification for his later actions is debatable, but that’s a whole other story.
