Maroc : Oasis, les Champs du DĂ©sert Morocco: Oases, Fields of the Desert

Translation

– This is wheat?

– Yes, it’s wheat.

– So there’s a tremendous abundance of crops, and how many different crops are there in an oasis?

– In the winter, there’s soft wheat, barley, and during the summer, there’s also corn, which needs a lot of water.

– And then, there are also fruit trees, vegetables.

– Yes, there are carrots, there are fava beans, there are also peas that we grow.

[collapse]

Translation

– What’s that beautiful, flowering tree?

– That’s an almond tree.

– An almond tree?

– Yes.

– Are there olive trees, too?

– There are olive trees, apricot trees, fig trees, pomegranate trees… an exceptional bio-diversity.

[collapse]

Translation

In fact, a palm grove is made up of several strata. On top are the palm trees. Fruit trees profit from the shade: orange trees, almond trees, apricot trees. The latter’s foliage helps to tighten the mesh of this natural sunshade, which allows the growing of grain, animal feed, and produce.

[collapse]

Translation

This architecture also helps retain humidity; we’ve seen how the plants release humidity into the atmosphere. Well, in a palm grove, this humidity is going to be trapped by the palm trees’ canopy. At night, the temperature goes down. When it touches this coolness, the water vapor condenses and in the early morning, you see drops of water forming on the trees’ leaves.

[collapse]

– D’accord. C’est vraiment une course.

– Absolument.

Translation

– This is an important moment for this farmer, he’ll be able to irrigate his plot because water isn’t readily available in an oasis.

– Yes, exactly. You saw how he started right on time.

– He looked at his watch, right?

– Oh, yes, yes. It’s very important for him.

– How much time do you have to irrigate?

– Until 6pm.

– So it’s really timed, he has until 6pm. Afterwards, he has to replace the flood barrier and return the water to the community.

– Exactly. You see, he doesn’t go with the water, he’s saving time, you know.

– OK. It’s really a race.

– Absolutely.

[collapse]

– Exact. Vous voyez…

– Pour en perdre le moins possible.

– Absolument.

Translation

– Because here, he’s moving in phases.

– In phases. By plot.

– By plot. That is, there are lots of little barriers all over…

– Yes.

– And he’s going to open them gradually to water the whole of his plot.

– Exactly.

– And he runs from one barrier to another to close them. In fact, to have a good plot, you really need to study the water’s path.

– Exactly. You see…

– To lose as little of it as possible.

– Absolutely.

[collapse]

– Oui. Ça tourne, c’est un cycle.

Translation

– So all of this irrigation work is really a very important kind of expertise.

– Yes. You know, here people are trained on the job. Water as a resource is rare. The land is limited. So they usually have to consider the minimum waste and loss.

– And he looks at his watch regularly.

– That’s very important. That [is] about 20 minutes for this plot. You see, with the amount of water there, he can’t afford to make a mistake.

– So today, he can water during the day, but in a week, he’ll have to water at night.

– Yes, it’s in shifts, it’s a cycle.

[collapse]

– Non. Pour lui, c’est la fĂŞte !

– C’est la fĂŞte ?

– Ah, oui !

– C’est un bon moment ?

– Il est content, hein ?

Translation

– And the next time he’ll have water will be in several days.

– In a week.

– In a week. Before that, he won’t have water.

– No. For him, it’s a party!

– It’s a party!

– Oh, yes!

– It’s a good time?

– He’s happy, see?

[collapse]
