Devastated by numerous fires between the 12th and 19th centuries, the abbey is first and foremost a place of religious pilgrimage. Then during the Hundred Years’ War, fortifications, towers, and ramparts were built on the mountain. At the end of the 18th century, the abandoned abbey was converted into a prison until 1863. Named a historical monument in 1874, Mont Saint-Michel then underwent numerous phases of restoration.
