Brexit – Le Royaume-Uni sort de l’Union Européenne – Quelles prochaines étapes ? Brexit – The United Kingdom is leaving the European Union – What are the next steps?
Comme dans tous les divorces, le casse-tête juridique commence pour le Royaume-Uni. Avec le Brexit, le gouvernement britannique va devoir invoquer l’article 50 du traité de l’Union européenne qui déclenche le processus de retrait volontaire et unilatéral d’un pays.
Translation

As in all divorces, the judicial headache begins for the United Kingdom. With Brexit, the British government is going to have to invoke Article 50 of the European Union treaty which will set off the process of a country’s voluntary and unilateral withdrawal.

Londres pourrait activer cette procédure dès le sommet européen qui aura lieu les 28 et 29 juin prochains, une première dans l’histoire de l’Union.
Translation

London could activate this procedure as early as the European summit which will take place next 28 and 29 June, a first in the Union’s history.

Les membres de l’UE devront être unanimes sur les conditions du retrait ; le Parlement européen et les chefs d’Etat et de gouvernement devront donner leur feu vert.

EU members will have to be unanimous about the withdrawal conditions; the European Parliament and heads of State and government will have to give their green light.

La rupture à l’amiable commencera ensuite, des discussions pour déterminer les relations du Royaume-Uni avec les pays membre de l’UE vont s’engager, sur la place du Royaume dans le marché commun notamment.
Translation

The amicable split will then begin, [and] discussions to determine the relationship of the United Kingdom with EU member countries will get underway, in particular with regard to the Kingdom’s place in the common market.

Le Conseil européen présentera son projet qui devra être approuvé par les 27 ; tous les contrats liant le Royaume-Uni à l’Union Européenne devront être rompus d’ici deux ans.
Translation

The European Council will present its plans which will have to be approved by the 27 [member countries]; all the contracts tying the UK to the EU will have to be broken within 2 years.

Si les deux parties s’accordent sur tout, le processus aboutira ; en revanche, si l’Union Européenne refuse les conditions du Royaume Uni, les Britanniques navigueraient à l’aveugle dans une union dont ils ne feraient plus partie.
Translation

If the two parties agree on everything, the process will successfully conclude; on the other hand, if the EU refuses the UK’s conditions, the British would be navigating blindly in a union that they would no longer be part of.

Pour l’heure, la Banque Centrale Européenne devrait s’engager publiquement à soutenir les marchés financiers aux côtés de la Banque d’Angleterre, une manière de rassurer les investisseurs en attendant.
Translation

For now, the European Central Bank should publicly commit to supporting the financial markets tied to the Bank of England, a way of reassuring investors in the meantime.
