A number of French verbs require the preposition sur in front of a noun or stressed pronoun.

acheter (quelque chose) sur le marché   to buy (something) at the market
appuyer sur (le bouton)   to press (the button)
appuyer sur (le mur)   to lean on (the wall)
arriver sur (les 5h00, minuit)   to arrive at around (5am, midnight)
avoir de l’effet sur   to have an effect on
avoir de l’influence sur   to have influence over
boire (quelque chose) sur (quelque chose)   to drink (something) on top of (something else)
chanter sur l’air de (quelque chanson)   to sing to the tune of (some song)
choisir sur catalogue   to choose from a catalogue
compter sur   to count on
se concentrer sur   to concentrate on
copier sur (quelqu’un)   to copy from (someone)
croire quelqu’un sur parole   to take someone’s word, to take someone at his word
déteindre sur   to run into, rub off on
diriger son attention sur   to direction one’s attention to
donner sur   to overlook, open onto
écrire sur   to write about
s’endormir sur (un livre, une tâche)   to fall asleep over (a book, task)
s’étendre sur   to spread out over, measure
être sur le départ   to be about to leave
être sur le point de + infinitive   to be about to
être sur une bonne affaire   to be onto a bargain
être sur un coup (informal)   to be in a job
être sur une piste   to be on a trail
être sur un projet   to be working on a project, occupied with a project
être sur un travail   to be on a job, occupied with a job
fermer la porte sur (toi, le chien)   to close the door behind (you, the dog)
gémir sur ses malheurs   to bemoan one’s misfortunes
influer sur une décision   to influence / have an influence on a decision
interroger quelqu’un sur quelque chose   to question someone about something
se jeter sur quelqu’un   to throw oneself upon someone
se lamenter sur ses malheurs   to lament one’s misfortunes
loucher sur   to ogle
prendre exemple/modèle sur quelqu’un   to model oneself on someone
questionner quelqu’un sur quelque chose   to question someone about something
réfléchir sur   to think about, reflect upon
régner sur   to reign over
rejeter une faute sur quelqu’un   to place the blame on someone
rester sur la défensive   to stay on the defensive
rester sur ses gardes   to keep one’s guard up
retenir (une charge/une cotisation) sur le salaire   to deduct (an expense/contribution) from salaries
revenir sur (un sujet, une question)   to go back over (a topic, an issue)
sauter sur une occasion   to jump at an opportunity
tirer sur   to shoot at
tomber sur (un livre, une personne)   to come across, encounter (a book, someone)
toucher une commission sur les ventes   to earn a commission on sales
tourner sur (l’église, la droite)   to turn (toward the church, right)
travailler sur écran   to work on screen
vivre sur son salaire / ses économies   to live on one’s salary / savings
