Some French verbs need the preposition dans in front of a noun.

apprendre quelque chose dans un livre   to learn something from a book
avoir dans l’esprit / l’idée que   to have a feeling that
avoir dans l’idée / la tête de   to have a mind to
boire qqchose dans (une tasse, un verre)   to drink something out of (a cup, glass)
chercher dans (un carton, tiroir)   to look in (a box, drawer)
copier quelque chose dans un livre   to copy something from a book
courir dans (l’herbe, l’eau)   to run through (the grass, water)
coûter dans (les 20 euros)   to cost about (20 euros)
entrer dans (une salle, un appartement)   to enter (a room, an apartment)
errer dans (la ville, la campagne)   to wander around/through (town, the countryside)
fouiller dans (ses poches)   to look through (one’s pockets)
lire dans (le journal)   to read in (the paper)
manger dans une assiette
manger dans la main à qqun
  to eat off of a plate
to eat out of someone’s hand
mettre son espoir dans   to pin one’s hopes on
partir dans (20 minutes)
partir dans (les montagnes, la plage)
  to leave in (20 minutes)
to leave for (the mountains, beach)
pleuvoir dans (la ville, le désert)   to rain in (town, the desert)
prendre qqchose dans (un carton, un tiroir)   to take something from (a box, drawer)
reconnaître qqun dans (la foule, le distance)   to recognize someone in (the crowd, the distance)
regarder dans (la boîte, le frigo)   to look in (the box, the fridge)
verser (de l’eau, du vin) dans un verre   to pour (water, wine) into a glass
vivre dans (la misère, la peur)   to live in (poverty, fear)

    For apprendre quelque chose dans un livre, would d’un livre also work? Thanks!

      Yes, but apprendre dans un livre is more common.
