Syntagmes prépositionnels

A prepositional phrase, also called a compound preposition or a complex preposition, is a group of words including at least one preposition which, together, play the role of a preposition.

Par exemple…

Je vis à côté de la banque..   I live next to the bank.
C’est un problème, d’après Thomas.   It’s a problem, according to Thomas.

au contraire de   unlike
au cœur de   in the heart of
au coin de   in the corner of
au-dessous de   below, underneath
au-dessus de   higher than, above
au lieu de   instead of, rather than
au niveau de   at the level of, as far as
au sein de   in the heart of
au sujet de   about, on the subject of
autour de   around
d’après   according to
de côté   sideways
en arrière de   behind
en bas de   below, at the bottom of
en dehors de   outside of

  Conseil concis

The noun following a prepositional phrase can sometimes be replaced by an object pronoun.
