Thepast perfect is a compound verb form, which means its conjugation has two components:

  verb conjugation
1. auxiliary (avoir or être) imperfect
2. main verb past participle

Par exemple…

Avoir verb: donner (to give)

j’avais donné
tu avais donné
il avait donné
elle avait donné
nous avions donné
vous aviez donné
ils avaient donné
elles avaient donné

Être verb: sortir (to go out)

j’étais sorti(e)
tu étais sorti(e)
il était sorti
elle était sortie
nous étions sorti(e)s
vous étiez sorti(e)(s)
ils étaient sortis
elles étaient sorties

Pronominal verb: s’habiller (to get dressed)

je m’étais habillé(e)
tu t’étais habillé(e)
il s’était habillé
elle s’était habillée
nous nous étions habillé(e)s
vous vous étiez habillé(e)(s)
ils s’étaient habillés
elles s’étaient habillées

  Past participle agreement

As in all compound conjugations, the past participle in the past perfect may need to agree in gender and number with the word it modifies – learn more.
