The passé composé is a compound verb form, which means its conjugation has two components:

  verb conjugation
1. auxiliary (avoir or être) present tense
2. main verb past participle

Par exemple…

Avoir verb: donner (to give)

j’ai donné
tu as donné
il a donné
elle a donné
nous avons donné
vous avez donné
ils ont donné
elles ont donné

Être verb: sortir (to go out)

je suis sorti | sortie
tu es sorti | sortie
il est sorti
elle est sortie
nous sommes sortis | sorties
vous êtes sorti | sortie | sortis | sorties
ils sont sortis
elles sont sorties

Pronominal verb: s’habiller (to get dressed)

je me suis habillé | habillée
tu t’es habillé | habillée
il s’est habillé
elle s’est habillée
nous nous sommes habillés | habillées
vous vous êtes habillé | habillée | habillés | habillées
ils se sont habillés
elles se sont habillées

 Past participle agreement

As in all compound conjugations, the past participle in the passé composé may need to agree in gender and number with the word it modifies – learn more.
