Every French noun has a gender – masculine or feminine – and the very best way to know the gender for any given noun is to learn the gender with it. That said, there are some patterns that can help you determine the gender of a new word. Here are some noun endings that are usually feminine with a couple of examples and major exceptions. -ace audace, une face …

-ade la baignade, la cascade …
  Exceptions: le cade, le grade, le jade, le stade
   
-ance une abondance, la bienfaisance …
  No exceptions  
   
-ée (suffix) une allée, la chicorée …
  Exceptions: un apogée, un lycée, un musée, un périgée, un trophée
   
-esse une caresse, une faiblesse …
  Exception: le prépresse
   
-ie une académie, la bonhomie …
  Exceptions: le brie, le foie, le génie, un incendie, le messie, le parapluie, le sosie, le zombie
   
-ière une bannière, une cafetière …
  Exceptions: l'arrière, le cimetière, le derrière

  • Compound nouns are not included in exceptions since they follow their own rules.
  • Rare / archaic exceptions are not listed.
