French adverb

Encore is a French adverb of frequency with several different meanings, including again, another, more, and even.

1) Again

With a verb or as an interjection, encore means "again."

Par exemple…

Tu manges encore ?   Are you eating again?
Il a encore perdu son portefeuille.   He lost his wallet again.
– Elle est en retard.
– Encore ?
  – She’s late.
– Again?

Emphatic variations

  • encore une fois
  • là encore

Synomyms

2) Another

Encore + singular noun = "another."

J’ai encore une question.   I have another question.
Elle achète encore un croissant.   She’s buying another croissant.

Synonym: un(e) autre

3) More

Encore de + plural or uncountable noun = "more."

J’ai encore des questions.   I have more questions.
Elle achète encore du pain.   She’s buying more bread.

  • autres
  • plus de

4) Even, Still

Encore can add emphasis to a comparative:

C’est encore plus intéressant.   That’s even more interesting.
That’s still more interesting.
Elle est encore plus résolue aujourd’hui.   She’s even more determined today.
She’s still more determined today.
Chaque jour, il est encore moins raisonnable.   Every day, he is even less reasonable.
Every day, he is still less reasonable.

Synonym: même

Encore can also mean "yet" but this can be a little confusing – see Encore vs toujours.
