French Expression

Meaning (to have) nothing to do (with), (to be) nothing like
Literally nothing to see
Register normal
Pronunciation French sound files [rye(n) nah vwar]
IPA   [rjɛ̃ na vwaʀ]

Usage notes: The French expression il n’y a rien à voir literally means “there’s nothing to see / be seen.”

Par exemple…

Circulez, il n’y a rien à voir ici !   Keep driving, there’s nothing to see here!

But it’s far more common to hear it shortened, with or without avoir, into the idiomatic expression (n’avoir) rien à voir avec or (n’avoir) rien à voir dans, meaning "(to have) nothing to do with" or "(to be) nothing like."

Par exemple…

La 2CV n’a rien à voir avec les voitures modernes.   The Citroën 2CV is nothing like modern cars.
Je n’ai rien à voir avec cette décision.   I have nothing to do with this decision, This decision has nothing to do with me.
Cela n’a rien à voir avec mon projet.   That has nothing to do with my project.
La suite était marrante, mais rien à voir avec le film original.   The sequel was funny, but (it’s) nothing like the original movie.

Cela / Ça n’a rien à voir.   That has nothing to do with it, That’s beside the point, That’s irrelevant.
Cela / Ça n’a rien à voir avec la question.   That’s beside the point.
Ça n’a rien à voir avec la choucroûte. (informal)   That’s got nothing to do with anything.
C’est une chance que tu n’aies plus rien à voir avec (lui / ça) !   You’re well out of it! You’re better off without (him / it)!
Les deux choses n’ont rien à voir.   Not necessarily, That doesn’t follow, One thing has nothing to do with the other.
ne rien avoir à voir là-dedans / Je n’ai rien à voir là-dedans.   to have nothing to do with it / I have nothing to do with it.
(This last one is a weaker version of the French expression je n’y suis pour rien.)
