Usage notes: While most English speakers make decisions, the French take decisions with the expression prendre une décision.

  You cannot say faire une décision. Chez les Français, decisions exist and one must be chosen, rather than created out of thin air.

Variations

  • prendre la décision – to make the decision
  • prendre cette décision – to make this/that decision
  • prendre décisions – to make decisions
  • prendre quelques décisions – to make some decisions
    etc.

Par exemple…

Tu dois prendre une décision !   You need to make a decision!
Je prends une dizaine de décisions importantes tous les jours.   I make about ten important decisions every day.
Je ne suis pas d’accord avec la personne qui a pris cette décision.   I don’t agree with the person who made this decision.
La décision a été prise par le conseil.   The decision was made by the council.
