Grateful French Expression

Meaning thanks in advance
Register normal
Pronunciation French sound files [mehr see da va(n)s]
IPA   [mɛʁ si da vãs]

Usage notes: To thank someone in advance, you can use the expression merci d’avance. It’s pretty simple – the main thing is to be sure to use the correct preposition:

Par exemple…

– Je vous enverrai les résultats demain.
– Merci d’avance.
  – I’ll send you the results tomorrow.
– Thank you (in advance).

To thank someone ahead of time for something specific, merci d’avance can be followed by pour + noun or de + verb.

Merci d’avance pour votre assistance.   Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Merci d’avance de préparer le dîner ce soir.   Thank you in advance for making dinner tonight.

Remember, it’s merci d’avance, not merci en avance or merci à l’avance.

Variations

These are more formal and less common:

  • d’avance, merci
  • en vous remerciant d’avance
  • merci par avance
  • par avance, merci
