French Expression

Meaning to sleep late, sleep in; to have a lie-in
Literally to do the luxuriant morning
Register normal
Pronunciation French sound files [fehr lah grahs mah tee nay]
IPA   [fɛʀ la gʀas ma ti ne]

Usage notes: The French expression faire la grasse matinée is so much more evocative than its US and UK equivalents, "to sleep in" and "to have a lie-in," respectively. It feels extravagant to stay in bed longer than normal, and this is nicely expressed with the adjective grasse, which means "luxuriant" here, rather than "fat."

Par exemple…

Demain sera férié, donc je vais faire la grasse matinée.   Tomorrow is a holiday so I’m going to sleep in.
J’ai fait la grasse matinée ce matin, quelle volupté !   I slept in this morning, what bliss!
