French Expression

Meaning and so on, and more, I could go on (but won’t)
Literally and I pass over some
Register normal
Pronunciation [ay zha(n) pahs]
IPA   [e ʒã pas]

Usage notes: Et j’en passe is a useful French expression for making a long story short, telling the person you’re talking to that you’re sparing them the details. Indeed, et j’en passe is a shortened version of et je passe sur les détails; the adverbial pronoun en replaces sur les détails.

Par exemple…

Il m’a dit d’acheter des poivrons, des carottes, des citrons et j’en passe.   He told me to buy peppers, carrots, lemons, and so on.
J’ai tant de boulot ce matin : une téléconférence, deux rapports à rédiger, une réunion avec le patron et j’en passe.   I have so much work today: a conference call, two reports to write, a meeting with the boss, and more.

Variations

  • Je te / vous passe les détails – I’m sparing you the details
  • Je te / vous passerai les détails – I’ll spare you the details
  • J’en passe et des meilleurs – "I spare [you] some [details] and better ones"
